About this website

This website was developed as part of Saira Hussain’s PhD at Aston University. Saira is an audiologist and lecturer who teaches students training to work in audiology. She has previously worked in the NHS, where she enjoyed working with children and families.
Although she did not see many patients with microtia, her interest in this area grew through research with colleagues from Aston University, funded by the Microtia UK. This research explored how parents make decisions for their child when there is a unilateral hearing difference. You can read all about this study here.
That work showed that decision making is often a careful balance. Parents try to do what feels right for their child, while also supporting their child’s growing independence and involvement in choices as they get older.
Why this research matters
The first stage of this PhD focused on learning directly from children, young people and families about what microtia means to them. She asked questions about what it is like having microtia in different parts of life, including school and other areas. You can read more about this study here, and there is also a podcast where Saira Hussain talks about the project.
As children grow, their understanding of microtia and what it means to them can change. Families play an important role in supporting this and it is important to have access to clear, balanced information. This can help children and young people feel more confident in their own choices over time.
Working with families and the microtia community
Alongside her research, Saira has spent time at Microtia UK events and has gotten to know many families over the years. It became clear that although there are already many helpful resources available, families were still looking for more. They wanted more opportunities to hear real experiences and have resources they could explore together at home.
Why this website was created
This website was created in response to that need by offering additional resources, with a particular focus on video content. It builds on the excellent work already available through Microtia UK. These videos share a range of experiences all in one place.
The aim is not to replace existing information, but to build on it in a way that feels practical, easy to access and useful in everyday life. It is designed to support conversations at home and help with questions. This helps to provide something families can come back to over time.
Families also highlighted that professionals need greater understanding of real experiences of microtia. Saira is working with colleagues in audiology and related fields to share this work more widely.

With thanks
Saira has really valued working with members of the microtia community throughout this project. A huge thank you to everyone who has shared their experiences and helped shape this website. Thanks also to Microtia UK for funding this PhD and making the project possible.
Thanks also to the following (pictured) for their continual advice and feedback throughout the project. PhD supervisors also include Dr. Helen Pryce and Dr. Amanda Hall.

Sharing this work
Saira Hussain has shared this research with families and professionals over the years. These include audiology related talks with people who support children with hearing differences. She has also spoken at Microtia UK events with families and young people. These conversations have helped shape the website so it reflects real experiences and everyday needs. Here are some examples of where this research has been shared:

Presentation at the HEaring Across the Lifespan conference in Italy
